Divine Music

SubbalakshmiArticle by Ms. Subbalakshmi.

There is a saying in Vedas that "Sisurvetthi pasurvetthi vetthi gaanam rasam phanihi".It means the child, the animal, the snake everyone can understand the Nectar of Music. Music is "Divine" weather it is Indian or Western. Music is incarnation of GOD himself. According to Hindu philosophy Music is one of the ways to attain Moksha (Salvation) Music is an integral part of every human being. Every activity in our life starts with Music. We acknowledge our birth to this strange world by crying immediately after we come out from our secured mother's womb. That Neonate's cry is Music. As we grow up and continue the journey of life the only one who always accompanies us is music. The seed of music is sown in every human being by mother who is the first Guru of Music. She sows the seeds of music in you by her sweet songs of love and affection. When you are a child at school you sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" that Rhyme is music. When you were playing and when you've Won.. You scream Hurray. that scream is music.

When you were young and when you've met your soul mate.. Your heart sings a beautiful song called Love. and that Love is music. You marry your soul mate to start a new life, but your new life is started with those wedding bells. Ringing of those "Wedding bells" is music. Your heart if filled with joy when you hold the tender hands of

your kid for the first time. that joy is music.

Music, Music, Music ...

Life starts with music, transforms with music ends with music. Coming to Hindu Philosophy, Music is been the core of Hindu philosophy. Like all the other forms in Indian Culture, Carnatic music is believed to have divine origin and music is venerated as an aspect of supreme "Nadabrahmam"

Infact music is an integral part of Nature. We can describe the connection of the origin of swarms to the sounds of Nature (as in animals & birds). One more classical example is flute, the sound emanating from a bamboo reed as air passes through its hollows. It proves man's keen sense of observation and perception that tried simulating these sounds. Carnatic music is completely melodious, with improvised variations. Like all the other forms of music it also rests on 2 main elements

1.Raaga and 2.Tala

Raaga in carnatic music prescribes a set of rules for building a melody whereas Tala the rhythm refers to the beat set for a particular composition. Rhythm is very important whether it is life or music like nature shows a rhythm in its seasons and never changes for any reason. Learning carnatic music is not simply a habit or hobby it is termed as "Naadopasana". The word upasana in Sanskrit means prayer i.e. prayers we offer to God

So, Naadopasana means Musical prayers we offer to God to get relieved from this worldly pleasures and to get liberated from the cycle of death and rebirth and sufferings and limitations entailed in embodied worldly existence.

Today, people are so immersed in the worldly existences and pleasures that they are even neglecting the divinity in their life. It's my anguished plea to one and all that don't forget Music, invite Melody into your life again and again. The fact is that you need not invite it, it is in you, it is everywhere around you. You have to just realize it. I request everyone to take part in this Nadopasana and contribute for the spread of Divinity all over the world and fill the world with peace and harmony.
